Vincent Van Gogh à Saint-Rémy de Provence
Lettre à Théo

Saint Rémy, May 1889

My dearest brother Théo.

Last night was once again hard for my body and my heart.
I sometimes feel overcome with loneliness and heartache.
I don’t even have a dog to talk to, a dog I could love and who would love me.
When I cut my ear, do not think it was an act of madness. No it was not.
When it hurts deep inside, you have to hurt your body to put an end to the flood of angst that overwhelms you.
Today I am in the lunatic asylum in Saint Rémy. My goodness, what is happening to me?
I have not heard from Gauguin.
Thinking of you.

Your brother,
Vincent
