Qui suis-je ?

Here is how art critic Xuriguera defined Lucas: “A self-taught, hot-blooded painter with no preconceived ideas. He belongs to that breed of artists who transcends eras and artificial boundaries, seeking out and finding the essence of existence”.

Lucas trained at the studio of Jean Denys Maillard, a portrait painter of the European school, and progressed as a free-thinker, away from the microcosm of the art world and refusing to exhibit until 1992.

1992 – ART IS BEING

A series of paintings involving the greatest bullfighters.

Exhibition at the prestigious Veranneman Foundation in Flanders: 150 oil paintings including 30, 250 x 200 cm format.

1996 – RETROSPECTIVE IN SAINT TROPEZ

Lucas recreates his studio beneath an enormous marquee on Voile rouge beach.

1997 – BESTIARY ART

1999 – THE CAMARGUE

A series of paintings with Manitas de Plata, in the church at Les Saintes Marie de la Mer.

2000 – GALERIE L

A gallery is opened in Aigues-Mortes.

2002 – THE AMERICAN INDIANS

2003 – THE COSSACKS

Approximately fifteen large-format paintings (250 x 200cm) on the history of the Don Cossacks, from the 16th to the 19th century, involving Denys Ilovaïsky, a descendant of one of the most illustrious Cossack families, whose portrait gallery is at the Hermitage Museum in Saint-Petersburg.

The series was bought by an American collector of Russian origin.

Lucas opens a studio.

Fragmented writing: Lucas invents a new form of writing which, in the same way as the abstract geometrical shape, is part of the secret.

2010 – LEGEND

Series of paintings on the legend of the three brothers of Pic Saint-Loup.

2011 – LETTERS TO MY MOTHER…

That I never wrote, or to my father.

2012-2013 DECOMPOSITION

Based on a bullfighting sequence, decomposition of five paintings.

Study on paper for some large paintings: fifteen or so canvases that, theoretically, do not belong together but which form the thread of a story culminating in the City of Souls project in 2014.

2014-2015 VAN GOGH

Based on a biography by David Sweetman, “Van Gogh : His life and his Art”, Lucas produces some studies for large-format paintings based on the life of Vincent in Arles with Paul Gauguin, in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence at the “lunatic asylum” and in Auvers-sur-Oise where he committed suicide on July 27,1890.
